Sirach 47:2-11
Psalm 18:31, 47 and 50, 51
Mark 6:14-29

A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:

In our readings today, we recount two instances where people "lost their heads" through the actions that their words precipitated.

In the first instance, from the Book of Sirach, the author extols the virtues of King David in what he did through the power of God working in him to silence Goliath and to break the threat of the Philistines. In the second instance from today's Gospel of Mark, John the Baptist ultimately lost his head for being the voice of repentance.

In both cases, their voices were silenced, but through Sacred Scripture, they were forever remembered. One "voice" was for materialism and pride; the other voice was to prepare us to accept Jesus into our lives by word and action through repentance.

The choice is ours. Someday, sooner or later, our "voice" will be stilled. To which purpose will it be remembered?

O Lord Jesus,
send your spirit upon me, help me to be your mouthpiece.
Let me forever sing the praise of your name and follow right paths.
Amen.
