A reflection on today's Sacred Scripture:
Today, we remember St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, whose name is hardly a household word, even among Catholics. But if you take a few moments online to read about her long and amazing life, it will be an encouragement for your duties and challenges today.
Rose was a strong-willed little French girl who was born into privilege. She became an intrepid nun and survived the French Revolution, then later came to America. She worked with the poor, homeless, sick and hungry, including Native Americans. On the Missouri frontier, she and her sisters themselves suffered from hunger, cold and poverty. It must have been discouraging work.
She wrote, "The greatest and undoubtedly the hardest (cross) to bear is the lack of success in our work here. If a saint had been in charge, all would have gone well. "
It's heartening to see that even Saints become discouraged, yet they keep plugging along, continuing daily prayer and work. God blessed Rose's daily faithfulness. Like other great saints, she was practical and down to earth. Also, she seemed to learn as she went along.
She later wrote, "Learn to let others do their share of the work. Things may be done less well, but you will have more peace of soul and health of body. And what temporal interest should we not sacrifice in order to gain these blessings?"
She died in 1852 and was canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul ll.
